    But why does what works work? A response to Fifer, Henschen, Gould, and Ravizza, 2008

    The article "What works when working with athletes" by Fifer, Henschen, Gould, and Ravizza (2008) offers an interesting array of information and insights used by three highly experienced applied sport psychology consultants. This response article, however, contends that it may be possible to glean a further, and crucial, level of understanding by exploring the metacognition behind the selection of such courses of action. This may be provided through applied cognitive task analysis (ACTA) techniques to access the cognitive mechanisms underpinning professional practice. A suggested research direction is to use ACTA techniques such as in-depth interviews and cognitive mapping with highly experienced applied sport psychology consultants. Specifically, these techniques would enable readers to access judgments and decisions, attentional demands, critical cues and patterns, and problem solving strategies (Gore & McAndrew, 2009). This level Of understanding may help to establish how these cognitive processes impact on the support provided to clients, and in turn, assist in developing more conceptually rigorous training methods

    The illusion of competency versus the desirability of expertise: Seeking a common standard for support professions in sport

    In this paper we examine and challenge the competency-based models which currently dominate accreditation and development systems in sport support disciplines, largely the sciences and coaching. Through consideration of exemplar shortcomings, the limitations of competency-based systems are presented as failing to cater for the complexity of decision making and the need for proactive experimentation essential to effective practice. To provide a better fit with the challenges of the various disciplines in their work with performers, an alternative approach is presented which focuses on the promotion, evaluation and elaboration of expertise. Such an approach resonates with important characteristics of professions, whilst also providing for the essential ‘shades of grey’ inherent in work with human participants. Key differences between the approaches are considered through exemplars of evaluation processes. The expertise-focused method, although inherently more complex, is seen as offering a less ambiguous and more positive route, both through more accurate representation of essential professional competence and through facilitation of future growth in proficiency and evolution of expertise in practice. Examples from the literature are also presented, offering further support for the practicalities of this approach

    ‘Multi-directional management’: Exploring the challenges of performance in the World Class Programme environment

    Driven by the ever-increasing intensity of Olympic competition and the ‘no compromise – no stone unturned’ requirements frequently addressed by HM Government and its main agency, UK Sport, a change in culture across Olympic team landscapes is a common occurrence. With a focus on process, this paper presents reflections from eight current or recently serving UK Olympic sport Performance Directors on their experiences of creating and disseminating their vision for their sport, a vital initial activity of the change initiative. To facilitate a broad overview of this construct, reflections are structured around the vision’s characteristics and foundations, how it is delivered to key stakeholder groups, how it is influenced by these groups, the qualities required to ensure its longevity and its limitations. Emerging from these perceptions, the creation and maintenance of a shared team vision was portrayed as a highly dynamic task requiring the active management of a number of key internal and external stakeholders. Furthermore, the application of ‘dark’ traits and context-specific expertise were considered critical attributes for the activity’s success. Finally, recent calls for research to elucidate the wider culture optimisation process are reinforced

    Magnetic field independence of the spin gap in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}

    We report, for magnetic fields of 0, 8.8, and 14.8 Tesla, measurements of the temperature dependent ^{63}Cu NMR spin lattice relaxation rate for near optimally doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}, near and above T_c. In sharp contrast with previous work we find no magnetic field dependence. We discuss experimental issues arising in measurements of this required precision, and implications of the experiment regarding issues including the spin or pseudo gap.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, as accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Students\u27 Perceptions of Adopting Minimal Transformative Wardrobes

    This exploratory research incorporates the publicly pressed ideas regarding minimal wardrobe adoption with academic research on transformative clothing to evaluate the understanding of sustainability in college students\u27 current and future life. After their unknown exposure to the adoption of a minimal transformative wardrobe by their instructor, the students were surveyed regarding the perceptions of their instructor\u27s appearance, transformative clothing, the role of gender in adoption, and reasons for consumer adoption. Qualitative analysis revealed the perceived benefits of the instructor\u27s wardrobe adoption, including the themes of simplification, professional appearance, and saving time and money. Students expressed interest in owning transformative clothing and felt they could reduce clothing consumption. Gender differences were also identified when adopting a minimal wardrobe with more emphasizing males on environmental sustainability and females on increased work productivity. This study provides valuable insights on emerging professionals\u27 perceptions on minimal transformative wardrobe adoption and directions for future research

    Disease and psychological status in ankylosing spondylitis.

    Objectives. Psychological factors may be important in the assessment and management of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Our primary objective was to describe associations between disease and psychological status in AS, using AS-specific assessment tools and questionnaires. Our secondary objectives were to identify patient subgroups based on such associations and to determine the stability of the measures over time. Methods. A total of 110 patients were assessed at 6-monthly intervals up to four times using tools to measure disease [Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI) and the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI)], psychological [Hospital Anxiety and Depression Questionnaire (HADS), Health Locus of Control—Form C Questionnaire (HLC-C)] and generic health [Short form (SF)-36] status. Results. Eighty-nine participants completed all four assessments. Throughout the study, BASDAI, BASFI and BASMI scores correlated significantly with anxiety, depression, internality and health status, but not with levels of belief in chance or powerful others. Clinically anxious or depressed subgroups had significantly worse BASDAI and BASFI, but not BASMI, scores. BASMI scores were the least closely linked to psychological status. Mean scores for disease, psychological and health status were clinically stable over the 18 months period. Conclusions. Disease status scores in AS correlated significantly with anxiety, depression, internality and health status. Interpretation of AS disease scores should take an account of psychological status and the choice of measures used. These findings have important potential applications in AS management and monitoring, including the identification of patients for biological therapies

    Blaming Bill Gates AGAIN! Misuse, overuse and misunderstanding of performance data in sport

    Recently in Sport, Education and Society, Williams and Manley (2014) argued against the heavy reliance on technology in professional Rugby Union and elite sport in general. In summary, technology is presented as an elitist, ‘gold standard’ villain that management and coaches use to exert control and by which players lose autonomy, identity, motivation, social interactions and expertise. In this article we suggest that the sociological interpretations and implications offered by Williams and Manley may be somewhat limited when viewed in isolation. In doing so, we identify some core methodological issues in Williams and Manley’s study and critically consider important arguments for utilising technology; notably, to inform coach decision making and generate player empowerment. Secondly, we present a different, yet perhaps equally concerning, practice-oriented interpretation of the same results but from alternative coaching and expertise literature. Accordingly, we suggest that Williams and Manley have perhaps raised their alarm prematurely, inappropriately and on somewhat shaky foundations. We also hope to stimulate others to consider contrary positions, or at least to think about this topic in greater detail. More specifically, we encourage coaches and academics to think carefully about what technology is employed, how and why, and then the means by which these decisions are discussed with and, preferably, sold to players. Certainly, technology can significantly enhance coach decision making and practice, while also helping players to optimise their focus, empowerment and independence in knowing how to achieve their personal and collective goals

    Molecular orientational dynamics of the endohedral fullerene Sc3_{3}N@C80_{80} as probed by 13^{13}C and 45^{45}Sc NMR

    We measure 13C and 45Sc NMR lineshapes and spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) to probe the orientational dynamics of the endohedral metallofullerene Sc3N@C80. The measurements show an activated behavior for molecular reorientations over the full temperature range with a similar behavior for the temperature dependence of the 13C and 45Sc data. Combined with spectral data from Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR, the measurements can be interpreted to mean the motion of the encapsulated Sc3N molecule is independent of that of the C80 cage, although this requires the similar temperature dependence of the 13C and 45Sc spin-lattice relaxation times to be coincidental. For the Sc3N to be fixed to the C80 cage, one must overcome the symmetry breaking effect this has on the Sc3N@C80 system since this would result in more than the observed two 13C lines.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Ryan Revisited: Updating the Prevalence of Bastards

    Ryan, in Blaming the Victim, discusses welfare mothers in terms of an ideology of illegitimacy, and its impact on welfare policies. He then refuted the ideology. Since then several conditions have changed. This paper assesses how those changes may have affected Ryan\u27s conclusions, and whether AFDC recipients most likely to fit the ideology differ from other unmarried, pregnant women. Hypotheses: AFDC and non-AFDC recipients will not differ significantly in (1) promiscuity; (2) contraceptive usage; (3) number of children being raised; and (4) solution to their problem pregnancy. The sample was 424 AFDC and 741 non-AFDC pregnant, unmarried women. While some significant exceptions were observed, the hypotheses generally were supported. Considering that the sample of AFDC recipients is biased toward support of the ideology of illegitimacy, changed conditions appear to have reinforced Ryan\u27s refutations
